Our Poor Island / Arco Calheta


Another large fire has just started in Arco da Calheta.
The fire is in the zone Rochão and there are 7 fire fighters and 2 trucks tackling the blaze, the fire is believed to have spread to other parishes. 
The wind is so strong, and these poor firefighters are trying to battle flames and smoke in terrible conditions, most of them are also volunteers, so the island owes so much to them.



The alleged arsonist will be heard in court tomorrow.
The 24 year old man seems to have a history with fire, drink and drugs but no psychiatric problems.

    We are suppose to be staying in arc da Calheta from Wednesday next week. Does anyone know how bad the area is?

      This area has been affected. Its best to get in touch to where you are staying. Everything is a bit better now but land will be scorched from the fires.
