The damage over the weekend of the Cristo Rei statue, with a lump of concrete falling from the sleeve, believed to weight up to 20 kilos, and not 5 as first thought, is the subject on the front page of the Diario today asking the question who will pay for the repairs.
The statue was given as a gift 80 years ago, and this latest damage could be repeated as a large crack can be seen across the thumb. People are now asking who will pay for the damage, a bit stupid really if you ask me, as it is one of the islands most popular tourist attractions, and needs repairing quick, and reopened for people to enjoy.
Yes,just get on and repair it before it falls in to an even worse state and costs double what it might do now to correct. I am sure there are plenty of individuals within the government and council officials etc that could empty their very deep and corrupt pockets and provide the money required if necessary.
ReplyDeleteLike many things in Madeira, things are built with others money and then left and forgotten. Maintenance and repair do not seem to be order of the day as it means spending cash.
