Work will start in January on the big empty hole in Funchal, where the savoy once stood.
New artist impressions of the New Savoy have been shown today. The company AFA owned by Avelino Farinha is to invest 60 million for the new hotel, which will take about 2.5 years to complete. AFA group will also have control of the Royal Savoy and Savoy Gardens.
The Group also owns the two hotels on the beach front of Calheta, Calheta Beach Hotel, and the new Saccharum Hotel.
I'm not sure as of yet where people will stand who have paid in money as part of Timeshare when the old Savoy was knocked down 6 years ago, and brought off plan for the new Building.
Only a few people bought before work stopped and we got an early buyer discount which was value. We have still been able to use that week in the Savoy Resort, where we have an apartment.
ReplyDeleteOur latest information is that we will be able to take up our studio in the new Hotel as we arranged when complete. I expect we will be able to continue to take our week in the Resort in the meantime - possibly even in the hotel in calheta !!

As my retirement life span 'trickles away' the promise that the elderly may use blocks of their entitlement, to span, say 5 years, in the supposed 'new build' is a total farce. Couple in the effects of infirmity, and, you soon realise the cynical attitude of those that are extracting money from the elderly - on projects that are 'Pie in the Sky'.
ReplyDeleteMadeira suddenly spells 'Mafia' to me & my family. Much as I loved the Islanders. I would not trust the Royal Savoy Group, as far as I could throw them.
Just back from Maderia and yes the building of the new Savoy hotel is going on at a pace! The site is a hive of activity and its already looking very different to last year when we were there! We have now made six visits to the Royal Savoy using the time we bought when it was originally offered, in the new hotel. We have generally booked well in advance but have visited twice for the Flower Festival, one of the busiest times of year and have always been accommodated, so I do not understand what Mr Davies is on about? Whils't there recently we have already booked two studio apartments next year for the same week, so have been taking full advantage of the flexibility which we were originally given. We have no regrets buying into the new Savoy as the Savoy Group have fully honoured their commitment to us.

Roget Hitchen, we have just got back from the island after purchasing but not 100 % sure how we book as we have been given a week at the Royal Savoy. Do we contact the hotel direct, any advise would be appreciated.
DeleteAs a matter of interest. You obviously had no interest in choosing which part of the 'new build' would suit your needs. Perhaps a desire to mount a quality telescope to view Marine Activity - very important if you are of limited mobility, but, love the sea. Where the Sun rises and falls, all impacts on the choice of venue for a person of limited mobility. I gather you are rapidly consuming your 'purchased weeks' - well ahead of any completion of the Phoenix Hotel - even prepared to move along the coastline, to another venue, in order to 'burn' the time share units you were 'lumbered with'. I presume it does not 'phase you' that the monies trawled by the 'time share touts' - employed by the supposed 'best on the Island', had no intention of building a hotel themselves. The 'cleared land' was obviously a magnate for speculators. The trick was, how to remove the time-share deposits, without the purchasers being aware of the scam.
DeleteYou have illustrated one of the means by which you can invoke damage limitation, in such a situation!
I suspect you will never get to stay in your chosen time share, within the new build.
