IMPORTANT News about my blog.

Hi All,

I have been in the process of changing my blog over to the WordPress platform.
This change is nearly complete, and will happen over the next day or two.
Photos in the blog in Blogger, could not be transferred, so all photos have had to be entered manually, which I have had help with from a good friend, all photos in the early posts (first 2 years) are still being uploaded, but will eventually be complete in the next week or so.

WordPress is totally new to me and a little more complicated than blogger, but I have been learning from YouTube videos, and over the coming years I hope my blog grows as much as it has in its first 4 years.

if you signed up to the blog with your google account, you may need to sign up again, as I have not found a way to transfer you over.

I hope the blog is easy for you to sign up, and also leave comments.

If you notice any problems with the new blog please let me know and I will see these problems are dealt with quickly.

So once again, a huge thank you for all your support, and will see you on the New Look Blog very soon.

                                               Tobi.

Monochrom Madeira

My friend Nádia Rodrigues has a great Blog and Facebook page sharing images she has taken of Madeira in Black and White.
Nádia got her first DSLR in 2013 and this is where she started taking an interest in photography more seriously.
Like us all she loves Madeira, and noticed how very few people depict Madeira in Black and White.

I hope you enjoy her photos and please follow her blog and give a like to her Facebook Page.

Weather and Street View

With the bad weather continuing until at least Saturday 9th March, with strong winds and rough seas meaning the Porto Santo Ferry has not left Funchal for the last 5 days, you can now sit back and relax and travel round the Island with Google.
Google street view has launched finally for Madeira, I remember the cars being here 2-3 years ago now, and from today you can check all the images they have taken. So grab that little yellow man, and drop him somewhere on Madeira to start your Street View adventure.

Illegal Parking Meters

Parking meters in down town Funchal this morning had stickers placed on them claiming they are illegal.
The action came from the PND (New Democratic Party) that say they do not comply with the law No.81/2006 20th April.
The law states that in short term parking the price paid by users of the meters is split normally by times of 15 minutes, but most meters in Funchal have a minimum of 21 minutes, which is illegal and leaves citizens to pay more for parking. Also the minimum payment on most meters is 0.43 cents, and these meters do not accept 1 or 2 cent coins, forcing you to pay a minimum of 0.45 cents.

Storm 4th-5th November 2012

More bad weather hit Madeira last night, with the North Coast being hit the hardest.
Ribeira da Janela and Seixal were hit bad with landslides and roads blocked. Some properties have been damaged but no life was lost.
Madeira has had an unusual amount of heavy rain over the last couple of weeks, following almost 18 months of dry weather, so the ground is very dry, and the rain cant soak in as quick as it usually would.

I have collected a selection of photos from the internet and put them together in a set.

Refurbished View Point, New Mountain Road

Last week a new 17km stretch of road was opened between Eira do Serrado and Pico do Arieiro. This makes for a very scenic drive and also gives firefighters better access to the mountain areas. The road will be closed at night after sunset to avoid danger to drivers at the weather can change very quickly in this area.

Tomorrow 31st October 2012 the new refurbished view point at Cabo Girão will be opened. Cabo Girão is one of the highest sea cliffs in the world standing at 580m . The new view point will have a glass platform to walk out on, a new snack bar and toilets, and plenty of parking. The area has also been landscaped with new plants and trees. At the moment I am not sure how much they will be charging for entrance to the view point, but as soon as I know I will update this post with the prices.

Nadine Update

Thunderstorm activity has continued to increase near the centre of post-tropical cyclone Nadine, located about 800km west of Madeira and the Canary Islands.

Conditions are expected to gradually become more conductive for regeneration of this system into a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone as it moves over warmer waters in the next couple of days.

The system has a high chance 60% of becoming a tropical or sub-tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours.

The storm is moving south-south east at 20km/h and tropical storm force winds extend outwards of up to 445km from the centre.
