Flight Traffic on a windy day

A friend has sent me this video of flight traffic recorded from Flightradar24 on a windy day in Madeira.

The video was filmed yesterday and shows all the problems at Funchal Airport.

Emergency plan being put into place.

The president and members of the Municipal of Funchal are gathering for a meeting this morning to put a plan of emergency into place.

Over night things seem to have worsened. Thousands of passengers have be stuck in the airport over night as strong winds forced many flights to be cancelled, the winds are expected to be worse today, so this could well lead into another day of airport closure and cancelled flights.

Fires gained strength over night. The fire in Sao Roque started spreading again and moving closer to houses, a temporary shelter that was put up for people whos homes were affected had to be evacuated and people moved further away.

The hospital Marmeleiros at Monte this morning was evacuated, more to the reason of smoke and fumes in the area. All workers from the Hospital have been called to an emergency meeting at the main Hospital Dr Nelio Mendonca in Funchal this morning. 

More than 200 people in the Military area by Nazare have been moved, the fire has devastated the slope of Fundoa and also burnt some houses.

From 4am an operation was put in place to remove the buses Horários do Funchal from their location in Fundoa as a precaution as the fire was close to the facilities.

Strong wind at airport

Stong winds this morning at the airport have cause 3 flights to be diverted to Porto Santo, and a TAP flight from Lisbon was cancelled.

After the crazy announcement that Madeira's Airport will be called "Cristiano Ronaldo Airport" two petitions have popped up online.

New Airport Name???

It seems the Government of Madeira this evening  announced that they will name the airport Cristiano Ronaldo in his honour.

The announcement was made this evening while Ronaldo officially opened his first hotel CR7 along with Pestana group.

Windy at airport.

Strong winds are causing problems at the airport. In The last hour 3 planes have failed to land, 1 easyjet and 2 TAP, they diverted to Porto Santo.

Update 10.30..... a total of 6 planes have now been diverted to Porto Santo. Hope the wind drops so they can get to Madeira this afternoon.

Airport Closed

Every flight has now been cancelled for the rest of today at the airport. 

Boxing Day Landings...or not in Madeira....

Todays Bad Weather.

Its been a strange day for weather today.  Warm humid very hazy, strong sea's, and the wind getting stronger during the day.

This evening the winds picked up, diverting 6 fights, 3 of which from the UK, Strong seas and high waves around the island, and heavy rain which flooded roads quickly in Funchal.

Christmas decorations have also tumbled, as well as the white fencing around the land the Savoy once stood.

We had thunder and lightning for a time also, but things look like they will settle down over night taking us back to bright sunny weather.

BA landings or Not....

British Airways aborted landing again at Madeira today, they attempted to land twice before heading off to Lisbon, where they will stay over night.

They seem to have jumped straight into first place for failing to land on Madeira, I know safety comes first but the weather has been fine today with not much wind at the airport. A lot of very unhappy passengers. If I'm honest it has put me off booking a flight with them now as it seems to happen a lot.... Norwegian Air start flying again in October, and with free Wifi that suits me fine.

New Times for Airport Aerobus

I was kindly emailed the new times for the Airport Aerobus, to update on my website. 

Self check-in comes to Madeira Airport.

The Airports of Madeira will provide self-service check-in, a measure aimed at ensuring that significant improvement of quality of service provided to passengers.

This service is now available for passengers traveling in the TAP and SATA companies, however, in the near future, will also be accessible through other airlines join this service.

The kiosks for self-check-in are on the 1st floor of Funchal airport and also in Porto Santo.

Identification is "performed manually by entering the number of the electronic ticket or reservation number, discharging the passport itself, any credit cards with magnetic strips, or already printed boarding pass.
