10cents a bag.

From today supermarkets Pingo Doce and Continente will be charging 10 cents per plastic bag.
This law will be extended further to include all places giving plastic bags including phamacy, restaurants, small shops and so on.

Update

A friend has told me this is for Mainland Portugal at the moment, So Madeira is not affected I believe, but I am sure the law will come into place here soon. I will try to find out more.

    Yikes, that's quite excessive and whilst I agree that people should recycle as much as possible, perhaps food companies should look at reducing their own packaging. I also wonder how much if any, of the 10 cents charge will go into environmental projects?
